Meet Emily
Civil & Structural Design Engineer
After graduating from Queen’s University Belfast with my degree in Structural Engineering, I spent 4 years working for an engineering consultancy.
I had heard great things about working for NIE Networks from others in the industry and was ready for a new challenge.
As a Civil and Structural Design Engineer, I am involved in the design and construction of substations and electrical infrastructure for the transmission and distribution networks. My job requires a lot of collaboration with other design engineers, as well as consulting with those who will be operating and maintaining the network.
Initially I was concerned the work would be repetitive in comparison to working on building structures. However, that couldn’t be further from the case. Each project has its own challenges and it is exciting to be involved in every stage, from planning right through to the commissioning of the substation.
When I joined NIE Networks I was surprised by the breadth and variety of the job roles, and also the opportunities to move roles within the company, a quarter of the senior management team started off in NIE Networks as apprentices. Although I don’t come from an electrical background, I feel like there are plenty of opportunities for me to progress within the company.
With the current focus on sustainability, I’m also excited to work for a company that can make a real difference to the environment and create a more sustainable network. NIE Networks is currently making plans for ‘The Path to Net Zero Energy’ so I’m looking forward to the challenges associated with connecting green energy to the network and being part of an organisation that is leading a societal change.
