Meet Mark - Digital Cartographer
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, walking my dogs and playing golf.
What does a Digital Cartographer do?
The main role of a Digital Cartographer is to maintain and update NIE Networks' Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping system and the system that shows the high voltage network. We do this to ensure we have adequate records of the electricity network for future planning and for safety purposes.
Describe a normal working day?
A normal day for me would be to evaluate and interpret drawings to update the network on the mapping system, this may involve some investigational work.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is the satisfaction in making NIE Networks' data as accurate as possible. I also enjoy working on different projects and trialling new devices, systems etc.
How and why did you become a Digital Cartographer?
I've always been interested in mapping and studied GIS at university. I have over 15 years experience in the field of GIS working for different companies on a range of different types of projects. It is a good time to be in NIE Networks, there are many GIS projects on the horizon and with the advances in technology, GPS ,mobile mapping devices etc. the field of GIS is a real upcoming area.
