Meet Matthew
Overheadlines and Underground Cable Jointer
‘From a young age I have always been interested in engineering and knew that staying on in school and going to university was not for me, as I am a hands-on learner. When leaving school, I looked at many different options and apprenticeships but NIE Networks was by far the best one out there, their training is of gold standard and you get to earn while you learn.’
‘Every day is different, some days I would be with an Overheadlines team refurbishing old pieces of network and then other days I would be creating new overhead power lines to renewable energy sources such as wind turbines.’
‘The thing I enjoy the most about my job is the variety of work, every day you are in a different place all over Northern Ireland doing different kind of jobs. It is rewarding to see the work completed.’
‘I would recommend doing research on the NIE Networks website and general information online about the job role and that will give you a better idea of what it fully involves. I would advise anyone with an interest in engineering and is willing to learn to just go for it, as it is a really good place to work and a job for life.’
