  • I'm having my fascia or windows changed and the electricity cable is in the way, what do I need to do?
In order to work safely, your electrician may need the electricity to be disconnected temporarily.  If this is the case please call our customer helpline number on 03457 643 643, in advance of the work being done.
  • I'm doing DIY at my property, what safety precaution should I follow?
Here are some important tips for staying safe when you're working on your property:
    • Take care when carrying ladders or using cherry pickers and make sure you stay at least 5 metres (17 feet) away from overhead lines and equipment.
    • Don’t touch a tree branch if it is in contact with a power line.
    • Overgrown branches can cause power lines to clash which can bring them down, threaten lives and in some cases cause fire.  Plant trees well away from overhead lines and get advice on which plants and trees are safe to plant.
    • Before digging it is important to find out the location of any underground cables. Request a marked up map.
    • It is your responsibility to locate and avoid damage to any electricity cables in and around your work site.
  • I'm planning to cut trees on my land, what are the safe clearance from power lines?

There are a number of safety clearance diagrams on our website to help illustrate safe distances from power lines.

The amount of clearance required from lines and poles will depend on:

    • The voltage of the line. The higher the voltage, the greater the safety clearance required.
    • The contruction type of the line. For example, 110 kV tower lines require a greater clearance to either side of the line than a single pole (AP1) with 110 kV lines.

If you are unsure about how close your cutting work will come to overhead power lines, contact NIE Networks for advice. We may need to have our equipment made safe before your work starts.
  • Where can I find general tips for staying safe around electricity?

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is committed to reducing the number of injuries caused to members of the public coming into contact with the electricity networks and has produced a number of safety leaflets available from our website.
