Multiple Unit Installation
There is a key difference between connecting a single unit at one customer site and multiple SSEG units within different customer sites and in a close geographical area.
For multiple units you need to obtain prior written agreement from NIE Networks before you can connect.
1. Submit a G98 stage 2 application
G83 Stage 2 Pack
Complete the application form and submit the completed forms in hard copy to:
Market Operations - SRU
NIE Networks
Pennybridge Industrial Estate,
Larne Road, Ballymena, BT42 3HN
Provided all the information received is in order, we will register your application and will send a letter advising you of your unique job reference number.
Please see the application pack for the required information to be submitted.
2. Network Assessment
On receipt of all relevant information, we will place your application in our generation queue where we assess each application in turn to determine the extent of work required to facilitate your connection.
Once the network analysis is complete, we may contact the nominated person specified in your application to arrange a site visit:
- Where network reinforcement is required we will proceed to provide a quotation for the additional work.
- Where there is not network reinforcement required we will notify you that we agree in principle that you can proceed with your connection
NIE Networks will provide a quotation for any work required to connect you, or notify you that you can proceed with your connection within 90 days of receiving your application.
2a. Quotation (if applicable)
If you accept the quote (within the validity period as detailed in your letter) then a 20% deposit must be paid immediately for NIE Networks to continue to process your application. The final balance will be required before construction commences.
If you don't accept the quotation within this validity period, it will no longer be valid and will be removed from the generation connection queue.
If this happens your application will be cancelled, removed from the generation queue and your generation cannot be connected to the network. You will be required to submit a new application to rejoin the generation queue if you wish to proceed at a later date.
2b. Network reinforcement works (if applicable)
On acceptance of the offer NIE Networks will proceed with the activities required to connect the generator(s) to the Distribution System.
Any required reinforcement works must be completed before you can proceed with your connection.
Timescales for grid connection are dependent on project specific requirements.
3. Inform
The installer of your generating unit must register each individual generation installlation at or before the time it is commissioned.
Register generator connection
4. Submit documentation
You must return the commissioning forms and associated documentation for each individual generator (by post) within 30 days of the date of commissioning your generator so that we can register your installation and arrange to fit an import/export meter.
Full details of all documents to be submitted can be found in the Stage 2 commissioning pack.
5. Changing your electricity meter
Once we have received your application and checked all of the information, we will arrange the installation of an import/export electricity meter, if required.
An import/export meter records the electricity units being exported to the grid. This process can take up to four weeks.
6. Choosing a supplier
You will need to agree a purchase contract with an export supplier to sell your electricity units. Please note: you may have two electricity suppliers – you may buy electricity from one supplier and sell or export electricity to another supplier.
NIE Networks has no involvement in the purchase contract agreement – your chosen export electricity supplier will provide this information. It will be your responsibility to provide export meter readings to your export supplier.
For more information on electricity suppliers operating in Northern Ireland, you may wish to consult the Utility Regulator or the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland [links open in a new window].
The purchase agreement with your chosen electricity supplier will only come into effect after this import/export meter has been installed.
